Planning for NaNoWriMo

October 30, 2009

I have the first draft of an outline ready to go for NaNoWriMo (I used the procedures from my RPG to guide me). Normally I’d like to sit on an outline for a few weeks to make sure I’m satisfied with the plot, but November 1 is rapidly approaching, so I’ll only have tomorrow to make any final tweaks before I start writing.

More RPG Actual Play reports

I posted another actual play report from my Skype-based Spirit of the Century game on RPG Geek (and I put this one up a few weeks ago, but forgot to mention it here).

Novel Update

October 24, 2009

After some more discussions with my brother, he convinced me that taking a break from editing could actually be beneficial, since the “slog through it at all costs” attitude I’ve been sticking to might not be resulting in my best work. Besides, it’s not like taking a month off for NaNoWriMo will be bad for my writing. I took yesterday off to relax a bit, and today I worked on an outline for NaNoWriMo. I tried to use the mechanics from the RPG I designed to create the outline (usually the hardest part for me, aside from editing) and it worked really well. I talk about it a bit over on my RPG design blog. I’m not 100% sold on the outline I created today since I’m not sure it will be long enough and it has kind of a downer ending, so I’m planning to try again tomorrow.

Novel Update

October 21, 2009

My brother talked me into the idea of doing NaNoWriMo whether I finish editing this novel or not, but I’m still hoping to finish the editing on this one before the end of the month.

Novel Update

October 20, 2009

I got a late start today, which threw me off my stride. I’m also running out of easy issues to fix and am having to go back to the stuff I skipped on my first pass because it was too hard. I’m still agonizing over whether I’ll be done editing this novel in time to do NaNoWriMo. I’ve had some thoughts about tying a NaNoWriMo novel in with my RPG design project, which I blogged about here.

Novel Update

October 19, 2009

I’m making progress. I’m resolving a lot of the issues by saying, “no, I like the way I wrote it originally, I’m not going to change that”. I’m a little concerned that I’m doing that because I just want the project to be over, but hopefully I’m making the right calls.
