Writing Update

April 6, 2009

Since I finished my latest novel draft on Friday I’ve distributed it to a few first readers to give me some feedback. I took a short writing vacation over the weekend, but I’m not great at relaxing and not doing any writing felt strange (which is a good thing, I suppose).

Today, I started working on some ideas for a new novel. I’ve got one idea that I think I would enjoy writing but would require a lot of research first, so I don’t think I’m going to do it, at least not right now. I’ve got another idea that I’ve already written some scenes for, but I’m not feeling that passionate about it. I’ve got a third idea that might have potential, but I’ve only got some characters and theme ideas so far, no conflict or plotlines. I’m working on trying to flesh this third idea out right now. I definitely want to try to do an outline first this time. Last time I hit a lot of blocks and dead ends when I was writing more organically, but when I started working from an outline things went much more smoothly.

I’m also looking at the yWriter writing software. For the first novel I just did everything in a giant word processing document, but that was kind of clunky. Using yWriter is more like using a software IDE. It feels a little bit strange right now, but I expect that I’ll get more used to it as time goes on. The way it structures things might make it more amenable to better version control than I used last time (i.e. e-mailing drafts to myself in gmail), so I need to look into that.

I should probably also work on getting a few of my short stories into a submission-ready state and submit them. One is content ready, and another one only needs a rewrite on one scene, but I’m dreading the tedious aspects of getting the formatting right and writing cover letters.

Since Sunday, I’ve been reading my current draft and noting some required line edits. Today I finished reading and started implementing the edits. I’m currently 151/399 of the way done. The new issues are things I noticed as I was reading that go beyond mere line edits. There are a few more that will show up, but they’re noted in red ink on hardcopy pages that I haven’t gotten to yet, since I’m dealing with my hardcopy notes in order and I haven’t worked all the way back through to the end yet.
