Writing Update

March 27, 2009

Today I couldn’t get the opening lines of a new story out of my head, so I wrote 264 words.

Since Tuesday, I’ve been reading a friend’s novel manuscript so I can give her feedback. She’ll be doing the same for my novel.  It should take me a few more days to finish my first pass on her novel, and then I’ll work start the new editing pass on mine.

I had a cold or allergies or something today, so I decided not to push myself too hard. I declared one of the remaining issues a non-problem. I also renumbered the chapters so I don’t have any gaps or any chapter numbers like 19A. The only other open issue is independent of the text, so I’m going to declare what I’ve got now my completed first draft. In a week or two I will start the rereading and editing process again.

I switched the viewpoint character in the chapter that was giving me trouble, which let me make progress with it. I’m not 100% sold that I solved the problem completely (there’s some hand-waving in a paragraph at the end of the chapter), but I’m in a better place than I was.

Of the two issues that are still open, one of them is completely independent of the text, and I’m still debating whether I really need to fix the second one. The next step after I figure out what to do with those two issues is to put the novel on the shelf for a week or two, and then come back to it with fresh eyes for another editing pass.

Negative wordcount?!?! I chopped out an old chapter that was 1583 words that was half pointless filler and half obsolete plot that no longer made sense. I managed to salvage about 10% of it and reuse it in another chapter. I was hoping to be able to come up with enough new material to completely cover the delta, but I’m feeling tapped out for the day.

Some of the issues that I marked as “resolved” today had already been resolved in the past, I just hadn’t properly realized it at the time. Some also got the “not a bug” treatment. A bunch did get genuine resolutions today, though. I’m pretty happy that I’m closing out so many of these.

Of the six issues I still have open, three are all contingent on me figuring out one last plot element. I’m not really sure how to resolve it yet. It’s something I’ve been banging my head against for a few days now, but I’m still not getting any ideas. The other three can all potentially stay open through the next editing pass, since they’re largely cosmetic.

Not a lot of words written today, but I made good progress on issue resolution.

edit: Got a bit of a second wind, so I did a little more work. Mostly I combined some shorter chapters into longer ones. Here are the revised stats for today:

A reasonably good day today. I reworked some of the stuff in the final chapters to fix a bunch of issues, and I think the ending works better now. I had a big plot thread dangling before, but now I worked resolving it into the final action scene in the book which I think makes the ending stronger, and it works better dramatically than my plan of having all the characters take a break from the main action, run off to deal with the dangling thread, and then return to finish up the main narrative thrust. The only downside is that it is a pretty big coincidence that the plot thread just magically asserts itself in the place that the important characters happen to be, but I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch.

Not the best day today, but not the worst. I filled in another gap in the story, but the stuff I added will necessitate a change in the final chapter. It’s probably for the best, since I was having second thoughts about that chapter anyway.
